HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD

The regular meeting of the Board' of Governors of the Otago Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by Dr Fulton (chairman), Professor G. E. Thompson, the Eon. D. T. Fleming, Messrs T. K. Sidey, M.P., J. M. Gallaway, and W. E. Brugn. Accounts amounting to £1961 12s 8d wore passed for payment. The board’s debit balance, after payment of accounts, was shown to be £5289 13s 7d. , Mr T. K, Sidey wrote . stating that by way of marking his association with the board, and also to_ encourage sport at the girls’ school and cricket at the boys’ school, he desired to offer-a sum of £IOO, to bo invested by the board and held by it as a permanent endowment on the following conditions: —Ono-half of the annual income from the said sum shall be applied in the purchase of a medal, to be kpown as the “Sidey Sports and to be awarded to the girl who obtains the highest number of points at the annual sports of the girls’ school. The other half of the income to be applied in the purchase of a bat, to bo called the “Sidey Bat,” and to be awarded to the boy who has the highest batting average for the season in all matches in which the First Eleven of the boys’ school plays against a team representing another school, whether the latter school is in Dunedin or elsewhere. The annual match played between past and present pupils shall be included with the inter-school matches for the purpose of computing the, batting average. The Chairman said that the board and the pupils and the staff were most grateful to Mr Sidey for his generous gift. The conditions were excellent.—lt was- heartily agreed to accept the gift and record thanks to the donor.

The Rector of the Boys’ High School reported that the total number of boys upon the school roll on the last day of the term, August 26, was' 517, of whom 135 were seniors, 346 juniors, and 36 paying pupils (including os before one senior and one paying pupil absent through illness). The corresponding figures for tlie end of the second term, 1916-1920 are respectively 424, 425, 449. 473, and 472.

The Principal of the Girls’ High School reported that the number on the roll for August was 384 —110 senior free pupils. 252 junior free pupils, 19 paying pupils, 3 parttime pupils. The free places of three pupils had expired, and they became paying pupils. The roll numbers for the same month in 19.17, 1918, 1919, and 1920 were repectively 304, 349. 363, and 336. Mr S. Wolf left on August 24 in order to judge a singing at Gisborne. Miss Campbell accompanied ,19 girls, who/ travelled on August 26 to Ashburton to play a return hockey match with the High Schools’ team there, and were going thence on Friday to play the Christchurch Girls’ High School team on August 27. Sir James Allen, High Commissioner for Now Zealand, forwarded five applications from Great Britain for the position of lady principal of the Girls’ High School. Tho board decided to held a special meeting on a date to be fixed for the purpose of making the appointment from among the applicants, who include many from New Zealand and Australia.
