N.E. VALLEY CRICKET CLUB

The first annual meeting of this club was held last evening at Dormer’s iea Rooms, North-East Vauey, IVlr A. E. Ansell in Uio chair. There was a largo attendance ot members and friends.

Mr A. Martin, of the Otago Cricket Association, said it gave him great pleasure to see so many members ot Hie club present at tms their first annual meeting, and especially the boys. There was no liner game than cricket. It made them good sports, and at the same lime good citizens. The association was there lor their benefit, and fie hoped they would elect a representative wfio would take-a live interest in-tho game, and in the a naira of tho association, which was there to look after their interests solely. They rated tfie members of every club at Is a head, but that did not by any means jiay for tho expenses incurred, ihey were laced with a debit balance now of ±l7O, and an art union had been arranged to wipe this oui. They had engaged' a coach, and wanted to send a team to Auckland during tfie season. He hoped that Ulago would not take a back seat in this matter. Ho felt sure they would do their utmost to make a success ot tho art union, and they would bo enabled to improve tneir grounds and put cricket during tho coming season on a sound basis.

Tho annual report showed the finances to be in a healthy condition for so young a club, and their record during the ppst season was one ot which they could be proud. Tile Chairman, in moving tho adoption of the report, said lie was very pleased with the position which the dub had reached in one season, and he thought it reflected great credit on \ the members and the management. Ho hoped during the coming season the players would go in for tho game as whole-heartedly as they had done during the past season. Ho congratulated the playing members who had done so well in their averages. He was pleased to see so many young players present.. It was a good -tiling for cricket, a gopd thing for the boys, and a good thing for the club. Ho asked them in conclusion always to play the g,ame, and a clean game. (Cheers.) Mr G. Gillick, in seconding the adoption of the report, hoped that they would all take advantage ot - the coach this season. They were a young club, and he thanked Mr Martin for the encouraging words he had , spoken to them as representing the association. They hoped to have two wickets put down before, the opening Saturday, and he asked all the members to assist in getting the ground in order. The report was unanimously adopted. Eighteen new playing members were elected to the club.The following officers were elected: Patron, Miss Glendinning; president, Mr A. E. Ansell j. vice-presidents—Messrs Poison, More, Sanders, Rigby,'and P. C*Neill; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Mackle; chib captain, Mr C. Ingram; practice captains—Messrs M’lntosh and M'Kenzie; delegate to the Cricket Association, Mr Mackle; management committee—Messrs Gillick, Cowan, Rylance, M'Kenzie, Ferguson, MTntosh, and B. Hay; selection committee —Messrs M'Kenzie and powan. The president then handed Mr C. Ingram a bat for the best batting average 142), and in doing so said he would have much pleasure in donating another bat next year for tho best average. Messrs Davidson, D., Ferguson, and Elliott were, presented with medals foi\ bowling and batting. Mr Newey intimated that he would give a trophy at the end of the coming season for the best fielder, howler, and batsman. Mr Sanders on behalf of the management of the club handed tho president a very handsome photograph. Mr Ansell, in thanking them for the handsome and unexpected gift, said what ho hod done for them he had done with the greatest pleasure. He hoped to be of more, use to them during the coming season.

It was decided that the opening day should be September 17.
