OVERCROWDED HOUSES.
1U THE EOITUB. Sib,— lt was with a fooling of satisfaction that I read the letter by “resident” in your issue of Thursday last. Surely our civic authorities or other local societ.es can take this matter up. It will be a great pity if tfha top part of Carroll' street and also of Maitland street is spoilt by an influx of Syrians. I know for a fact that several houses have been purchased recently in this neighbourhood by these people, and also that other properties in this district are under negotiation. Why should ono of the best streets in the city be spoilt in this way? Apart from this the effect is to depreciate other property in the locality. Any valuator or house agent will vouch for this. Even if the municipal authorities will not act, surely it comes within the province of the Health Department to stop overcrowding. Certainly those people have to live, but control should be exercised over them in such a way as to make conditions better for them and, at the same time, stop this overcrowding and depreciating of property before it goes too far.—l am, etc., Resident (No. 2).
