The Public Trustee (Mr J. W. Macdonald) is at present in Dunedin engaged on departmental business. Dr M'CTvmont has resigned the position of senior house surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital. Miss G. C. H. Box has been offered the position of night sister at Pleasant Point Sanatorium, vice Sister Hotop, resigned. Mr and Mrs Thomas Fleming. St. Clair, purpose leaving for Invercargill by this morning’s express train, to take part in the Invercargill Jubilee celebrations, which commence to-morrow.

At Hanover Street Baptist Church recently. Mrs Kempton, on behalf of the mothers’ meeting and ladies ot the church, presented Mrs Hiett, the deaconess, with a gold wristlet watch and silver teapot, both suitably inscribed, as a token of love and appreciation. Mrs Hiett responded feelingly amidst applause. Afternoon tea was served, and n very profitable horn was spent in social intercourse. Members of the North End Boating Club took the opportunity at the annual meeting of presenting Mr Mark Higgins, the club coach, with a case of razors as a token of appreciation of his services. _ The presentation was made by the president (Mr S. S. Myers), who said Mr Higgins’s services had been highly appreciated, and those who had benefited from them had desired to make some small presentation in remembrance of what he had done for them last season. He hoped Mr Higgins would long fie able to give them his good advice and assistance.

The death has occurred at Russell, Bay of Islands, of Dr B. M. Moorhouse, a widely-known Canterbury resident. He was born in .South Canterbury ■ in 1859, and on completing his education at Christ’s College .went to England and studied at medical schools at Edinburgh and London Universities, and pained his medical degrees. Returning to New Zealand, he practised for many years in Christchurch, where he enjoyed a high reputation as a professional man, and for a long period was one of the examiners at the Medical School in Dunedin. He gave up practice a few years ago, but acted on occasions as surgeon on Home-going boats. For the 'ast few winters it was his practice to reside in Russell. Dr Moorhouse was one of the most valued members of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. The vacancy on the' Oarnaru Harbour Board, caused by the death of Mr Jasper Nicolls, Ims been filled by the Government nomination of Mr A. E. Lawrence, editor of the North Otago Times. Mr Lawrence, who is an old Christchurch boy. belongs to that -school of enterprising journalists who take an enthusiastic interest in public affairs. He is a borougli councillor, a member of the Oarnaru Repatriation Committee. and one of the town representatives on the North Otago War Memorial Committee. Mr Lawrence is keenly interested in educational matters, being parents’ representative on the Waitnki High School Board of Governors, a member of the Oarnaru South School Committee, and in addition to being an official of the local centre of London Trinity College of Music, he is actively associated with many smaller local organisations.
