OCTAGON THEATRE

' “ Outside the Law,” a powerful Univer-sal-Jewel production a which holds pride of place on the new' programme at tho Octagon Theatre, is sure, of attracting large audiences, judging by the attendance at the initial screening last night. The picture deals in an exciting and realistic manner with San underworld, and depicts the sins and iniquities of a Chinese gang, whose sola aim in life is to smuggle opium and elude the law. Priscilla Dean plays the principal role in a most convincing manner, and adds not a little to her reputation as an actress of considerable power. Misa Dean acts the part of Silky- Doll. who is brought up by her father in the slums of San Francisco’s Chinatown. She grows up among the wily Celestials, but she has a'philosophy of life which is based on the wisdom won by her wits. She has been her father’s " pal in many “shady” escapades, but later lives with him in respectability. However, fearing that he will betray them, the Chinese set a trap for her father, and he is imprisoned on a false charge of murder. While he is in gaol Black Mike, the leader of the gang, turns his unwelcome attentions to Silky Doll, who is in love with Big Bill, a “crook.” The gang then endeavours to entice Silky Doll into a plan for a big bank robbery, and she welcomes the scheme as a revenge- for her father’s imprisonment. She little suspects Black Mike’s treachery, but his scheme is foiled. How she and her lover frustrate the plans of the rogues is a story better seen than read, and all ends well. _ An enjoyable supporting list is also provided, and the Octagon Symphony Orchestra renders " Spirit of the Wind ” (Bennett)_ as an overture, and other incidental items in an enjoyable manner.
