(Pee United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. August 15. The offer of the Canterbury Progress League to maintain the daily morning delivery of rural mails (during the period of the railway cut has been declined by the Postal Department pending further consideration. The league, which had arranged to complete the service of inward and outward mails for all districts affected, was advised that the department is unable to accept the offer. WELLINGTON. August A The Acting Prime Minister, Sir Francis Bell, has made it clear that the Government cannot do more than it is doing to relievo unemployment in the dominion. In the course of a telegram to a local body which anplied for assistance Sir Francis_ said: “The Government is already employing as many men as funds permit, and has strained its finances to the utmost. Local authorities must meet the position by using local funds to find work for local unemployed.” . AUCKLAND, August 15. Replying to a very large deputation, representing the Auckland Hydro-electric League, the Hon. J. G. Coates said the Arapuni _ scheme must be a commercial undertaking. Once started it must be carried to completion. He would not start until he s&w the financial nosition clear. Aa to the probable date, he could not say, pending the return of Mr Massey.
