Sails at his own risk.” He did sail, and he did not regret it. MINING AND SMELTING COMPANY. TEMPORARY EXEMPTION FROM* AWARD. MELBOURNE. August 15. The Federal Arbitration Court has exempted the Wallaroo-Moonta Mining and Smelting Company of South Australia from the firemen and engine-drivers’ award for six months, unless the nrice of copper exceeds £7 7s per ton. In the interim an immediate resumption is expected as a result of the exemption. ACTION AGAINST ENGINEERING FIRM. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S CLAIM. SYDNEY, August 15. (Received Aug. 16, at 9.30 p.m.) An action has been commenced in which the Federal Government claims £29,662 from Milne Brothers,-an engineering firm in this city. The claim alleges that this amount was paid to defendants for goods which wore not supplied to the Cockatoo dockyards. William Milne, a member of the firm, is serving a sentence in connection with frauds at the dockyards. COST OF LIVING INQUIRY. SYDNEY, August 15. (Received Aug. 15, at 9.30 p.m.) At the Board of Trade inquiry into the cost of living, the Australian Mines and Metals Association and the Employers’ Federation applied for a reduction in the living wage to £3 15s weekly, in view of the decreased cost of living, contending that if the present wage were maintained it would lead to further unemployment. LIBEL ACTION. ACTION AGAINST A NEWSPAPER. MELBOURNE, August 15. (Received Aug. 15, at 9.30 p.m.) An action has been commenced in which Mr Willis, secretary of the Australian Wholesale Employers’ Federation, is claiming £SOOO damages for alleged libel from the Argus newspaper. The alleged libel was published in connection with the stewards’ strike, and refers to Mr Willis as a wrecker and as an undesirable importation from America.
