DAYIS CUP CONTESTS. AUSTRALASIA DEFEATS DENMARK. Presa Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW. YQRK, August 12. At CleTeland, in the Davis Cup tie between Australasia and Denmark, the first match showed Norman Peach superior _in court craftsmanship, his placements being better than Tegner’a, whose ground strokes were poor. Peach played a backcourt game throughout the match. The first set started out with a battle of services, but the Australian finally broke through, and Tegner tired. In the next set Peach had an easy time. The Dana made a brief recovery in the last set, but Peach’s back-court and placement work proved too much for him. J. C. Anderson was too fast for Engerslev in the second match, in which youth conquered. Anderson outstroked ana outplaced the veteran Dane, whose footwork was extremely slow. Engerslev made a remarkable recovery in the last set, winning five games before Anderson recovered and won.

In the Doubles J. 0. Anderson and Clarence Todd defeated Tegner and Hendrickeen, 6—3, 6—3, 6—2.—A. and N.Z. Cable. THE AMERICAN TEAM. NEW YORK, August 13. (Received Aug. 14, at 5.5 p.m.) W. T. Tilden, W. M. Johnston, R. N. Williams, and W. M. Washburn have been chosen as the United States Davis Cup team. —A. and N.Z. Cable. It was not anticipated that the Australasians would have much difficulty in defeating Denmark, which has not previously entered a team in the Davis Cup competition, and which has never c? copied a very prominent .place' in international lawn tennis. Although the scores have not been supplied in the two singles games, Anderson and Peach apparently won both their matches in straight sets, and a similar result was obtained by Anderson and Todd in the doubles. It is not made clear why Hawkes did not play, but Peach would not have included himself unless Hawkes were amiss, or ho himself had struck the top of his form. Australia is now in the final, and will meet the winner of the India-Japan match at Newport at the end of the month. ,It is expected that Japan will, win both games, and thus become the challenging nation.

The American team to defend the possession of the cup in the challenge round is virtually the same as that which wrested the trophy from the Australasians in Auckland early this year. On that occasion Williams was also selected to accompany the Americans across the world, but he was unable to make the trip. Both he and Washburn are strong players both in doubles and singles, and it will no doubt be found that they have been included' in the team for the purpose of providing practice for the two* champions, Tilden and Johnston, who will probably represent their nation in the final round of matches.
