Friday, August 12. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.)

Drunkenness. —John M'Guigan pleaded ouilty to a charge of drunkenness, and also to n breach of his prohibition order.—Ho was fined IDs, or 48 hours, on the first charge, and 20s, or three days, on the second. Evading Car Fare—John Bond, an employee of tho Electric Power and Lighting Department, was charged on two separate informations with travelling on a tramcar without paying his fare.—Mr Hay appeared tor the accused, who pleaded guilty. Mr White, for tho Oity Corporation, said the defendant, when asked for his fare, produced passes which were for use only when ho was engaged on the work of the Tramways Department or the Electric Power and Lighting Department. In neither instance was ho engaged at the time.—The Magistrate said that an important principle was involved in this prosecution, as the tram conductors were likely to bo placed in a false position by other employees acting as the defendant had done.—A fine of 5s and costs (28s) was imposed on each information. Charges of Forgery.—Thomas William Ellis, for whom Mr Moore appeared, was charged (1) with forging a cheque for tho sum of £l3 in the name of Jack Wood; (2) with forging a cheque for £l3 in the name of William Lilbiirne; and (3) with forging a further cheque for £33 in th"- name of William Lilburne.—Chief Detective Bishop conducted the prosecution.—Grace Simpson, a clerk employed by Wood and M'Cormaek. said that on August 2 the accused entered the shop and said he wanted to pay an account fob £R received from Mr Wood on an 1.0. U. Witness cashed the che’quo and gave the accused the change, whereupon he left the -■hop. Later on the cheque was relumed by the hank. —To Mr Moore: When the accused called at tho shop ho appeared to be the worse of liquor.—Alex. M'William, employed by Grav and Sons, of Milton, said the accused came into the shop and tendered a cheque for £l3, purporting to be signed by William Lilburne as payment for an account for 1 Is. Tho cheque was subsequently returned by the bank—James William Young, licensee of the Robert Burns Hotel, Dunedin, cave evidence as to the accused asking him j’o cash a cheque for £ls, which was signed "Jack Wood.” In reply to a question the accused said it was Mr Wood, of Wood and M'Cormaek.—William Awdry Lilhurno and John Wo:<d deposed that, the signatures on the cheques were forgeries.—Detective Loan said that when he interviewed tho accused after bis arrest he said he had been drinking aud did not remember much about the occurrences. —Mr Moor© entered a plea of guilty on behalf of the accused, who was committed to the next sittings of the Supreme Court for sentence.

By-Laws.—For allowing a horse to wander in Bow lane, Robert Leonard Martin fip"d 3 s and costs (7s).— —Richard Moore, who rode a bicycle without a light, was fined 5s and! costs (7s). For allowing motor vehicles to he without lights, Albert Kofced and Edwin Darcy were each fined 10s and costs (7s). Maintenance. —William Frank Whit©, for disobeying a maintenance order, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, tho warrant fo be suspended for two weeks to enable him to pay off the arrears amounting to £3.—An application to have tho amount payable under the order increased was refused. On a charge of failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order, Joseph Sutherland was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, tho warrant to lx? (runpend’d anon payment of arrears amounting to £G Us.
