(Pek United Phess Association.) WELLINGTON, August 11. William G. Downes, a post office official, was found guilty of failing to account for. moneys received on behalf of another Government Department, and was admitted, tp-.i probation for two years. The magistrate said he did not believe the story that accused forgot the matter. The money could have been put in the mail van had accused liked. Charged with having made false documents, and with committing theft and forgery, Bertram Burwood, with many aliases, camo before the court to-day. It was stated that accused altered a cheque from £8 10s to £BO 10s, and also forged the signature of G. H. Barton to- # cheque for £SB 10s. Syme (Whang*- ' rei) was also charged with stealing VUuobJe'; books from the public wharf at WelUngv ton, and stealing £63 from the National Bank (Auckland). In the course of the police evidence it was stated that accused sailed under an assumed name from Sydney, and was arrested there. Ho had represented that he held shares in the Far* ' mers’ Union Trading Company, and had a half share in a Studebaker oar, which waa being sent down from Auckland: Accused had £64 when arrested in Sydney. He said', his correct name was Theodore Poulten. He said he _ got a diamond rift*-’ from a returned soldier whom the-pule*'' could not trace. Accused admitted /th*' theft, and was sentenced to a month: He was remanded to Auckland to answer further charges.
