FIRES.
At 9.55 tt.m. yesterday the Central Fire Brigade receded a cad to a chimney ure in mo City Hotel, but its services were'not required, us no damage was done.
A lire was discovered, by a passer-by at about mid-day on Sunday nr the premises of Messrs Ai ‘Donald and Miller, bacon curers, Green island,, which, but tor its timely discovery, mignt have had dieostrous consequences. ine fire, winch was extinguished with several buckets of water, occurred in the portion of the premises occupied as a billiard saloon by Air T. Anderson. Slight damage was done to the floor. The Central Fire Brigade received a call at 1.25 p.m. yesterday to A. Murdoch and Co.’s manuacturing chefmists, 85 St, Andrew street, where u lire had originated in the portion of the works known as the jelly lactory, through a tin of oil, which was being heated on a gas ring, exploding And setting lire to the room. The roof and one end ot the building w’ere badly damaged, as well as a stock of jelly crystals which were in the course of manufacture. The water caused considerable damage to the stock on to ground floor. The damage would liavo been of a much greater extent had the brigade not covered a large quantity pf stock with tarpaulins. The building and stock were both insured in the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company office, but the amounts are not at present ascertainable.
