MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION.

The monthly meeting of the executive of the Manufacturers’ Association was hold last evening, and was presided over by Mr \V. R. Hayward. The New Zealand Sugar of Milk and Casein Company wrote with regard to railway rates, and stated that the railway rate on muriatic acid was 50 per cent, of the cost. The rate was £6 10s per ton, and the rate in milk sugar £3 Is lOd per ton. The' writers also gave the rates on other commodities.— Mr Greenfield explained the position, and asked that the association assist in bringing about an improved condition of things. His firm was forced to compete with foreign competition without any protection. Ho was going to Wellington when Parliament met to represent matters, and the support of the association would strengthen his hands.—lt was resolved that the matter bo laid before the local members of Parliament, and that the chairman of the Board of Trade be informed of the position. Messrs Irvine and 1 Stevenson wrote that now it was an established fact that the Government was going to control sugar for a further year, thev suggested that their previous suggestion might be given effect to—namely, that thev should agitate against Auckland manufacturers being placed on a better bas : a, as regards price, than the rest of New Zealand. Tt was decided that a eonv of the letter be sent to the Department of Industries dealing with the matter. . Messrs Irvine and Stevenson wrote with regard to Invercargill freights, that at present Dunedin was cut off from steamer communication with the Bluff or Invercargill, although northern ports were not. They suggested to the Union Steam Sinn Company ‘that the Melbourne boat nvght .take Bluff cargo, but the company bad refused on the grounds that the Melbourne boats wpot to TbmcHin.
