SMUGGLED JEWELS

BOLSHEVIST INGENUITY

AMERICAN PRECAUTIONS

Pims Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 7.

The American Jewellers’ Association is offering a reward of £IOOO for information that will lead to the conviction of diamond smugglers. It appears that Russian Bolshevists are endeavouring to place in the world’s markets £7,000,000 worth of looted diamonds and other jewels. Crossing the border via Reval the smugglers disposed of millions of pounds’ worth in London. The jewels were smuggled ihto America with the greatest ingenuity, being concealed in walking sticks, boot heels, watches, ant* picture frames. The smugglers even employed pet dogs, which were compelled to swallow the stones.—A. and N.Z. Cable. LONDON SURPRISED. LONDON, August 8. (Received August 9, at 7.30 p.m.) Mr Lloyd George’s announcement in Paris that he will not attend the Washington Conference surprised London Government circles, which attribute his decision to the enormous accumulation of work requiring his personal attention during the autumn. It is further suggested that the anticipated developments in the Irish situation has caused the Prime Minister to change his mind. Some people are inclined to associate the chancre of plan with the possibility of a general election in the autumn.—Times. PARIS, August 8. (Received August 9, at -7.30 p.m.) Reuter’s Agency is authorised to state that neither the delegation nor the Embassy has made any statement legating Mr Lloyd George’s intentions in the matter of going to America. Moreover, Mr Lloyd George has received no American journalists.—Reuter.

LONDON, August 9. (Received August 9, at 5.5 p m.) The Daily Chronicle’s Paris correspondent says that Mr Lloyd 'George has not informed journalists that he is not going to Washington. “I am informed,’’ he says, ‘that Mr Lloyd George intends to accept President Harding’s invitation to visit Washington as the official British representative.”—A. and N.Z. Cable
