The not-outs, Smart and Partridge, faced Gregory and Armstrong. Four runs had been added, when Oldfield snapped up Partridge at tho wicket off Gregory. Tho century took two hours. Rotherham was smartly caught by Andrews before he had scored. Eight for 102. Cross joined Smart, who was batting cleverly, but at 128 Armstrong brilliantly dismissed him with a catch off his own bowling. The partnership with Cross had added 26. Before Howell, the last man, had a chance to score Cross was run out. Armstrong finished with a fine average. The weather was still unsettled when Bardsloy and Coffins opened to Howell and Rotherham. Bardsley immediately got busy, cutting and hitting both bowlers to leg, long hops and full tosses assisting the scoring. Thirty appeared in 15 minutes, and tho half-century in 25 minutes, Bnrdaley’s share being 36. At 56 Howell found Collins’s off stump. With Macartney as a partner Bardslev showed delightful cleanness. He hit 60 out of 78 iy 42 minutes. At 89 Partridge relieved Rotherham, and Quaife .came on for Howell at 115. Bardslev when he had made 75. in frying to hit Partridge to leg, was caught bv Rotherham. There were twelve 4’s in his total. Two for 124. Andrews got his leg in front to Quaife before scoring, and Taylor at 3 made the same mistake to Partridge. Pcllew joined Macartney, and both became aggressive. Macartney at 50 was missed by Scorer at long-off. The fielding was uncertain, and byes accumulated fast as a result of poor bowl'll g. The second century appeared in 126 minutes. Ton runs later Macartney skied Partridge to Holdsworth at short leg. Five for 225. Pefiew at once became lively. He hit Quaife for 6, but failed to negotiate the next ball. Gregory partnered Armstrong. Scorer relieved Partridge at 276. Armstrong’s _ punishing driving brought Howell on vice Quaife. Three hundred then appeared. The new howler’s first over wa.s fatal to Gregory. Seven for 303. Armstrong made things merrv, getting 50 in 55 minutes. Extras contributed 41.
