GILBERT AND SULLIVAN

COMIC OPERA SEASON.

Tho box plans lor tne seven-nights’ season of J. U. Williamson’s Gilbert and Subivan season will be opened at ttio liristol tomorrow morning at 9 o’clock. The season ot comic opera at His Majesty’s Theatre beginning on Saturday next, should be one of tho most .popular moves made by the J. C. Williamson management tor a very considerable time. The theatre-goers have had something of a surfeit oi musical comedy, so the change will be a welcome one. Gilbert and Sullivan have survived the opposition of the last quarter of a century, and have charmed more persons of musical taste than, have the works of other composers ol light opera. The revivals will include “The Mikado,” “The Yeoman of the Guard,” “lolanthe,” “The Gondoliers,” “Patience.” “H.M.S. Pinafore,” and the popular “Pirates of Penzance.” Tho recent Australian reason was a phenomenally successful one. A revival in London was also remarkable for the extraordinary patronage accorded each production. The shorus is a strong one, recruited from the ranks of the Grand Opera Company, and the orincipak have been carefully selected. Tho season Js particularly appropriate at the present, when revivals of Gilbert and Sullivan’s works are meeting with enormous success, in both England and America. The principals are all singers and actors of note in the comic opera arena, and include Messrs James Hay, Frederick Hobbs. Albert Kavanagh. Jack R. Raison, and Charles R. Walenn also Misses Patti Russell. Byrl Walkley, Mollv - Tyrell,- Grace Grotty. Thelma Carter," and Cissie Vaughan. The season will commence with a performance of “The Gondoliers” on Saturday next, which will be repeated on Monday next. This w'U he followed for one night each by “The Mikado.” “The Yeomen of the Guard,” “lolanthe.” “Tho Pirates of Penzance,” and “H.M.S. Pinafore.” A fascinating feature of this high-class musical attraction L said to be the excellence of the orchestra and chorus, which, under the direction of Gustave Slapoffski is claimed to be of unusual brilliance. The curtain will rise each evening at 8 o’clock.
