The fortnightly meeting yesterday evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. M. Stevenson) Crs M'Lachlan, Jones, Watson, Tait, Luoni, Reeves, M‘Donald, Allen, and Bunn. K Macfio wrote that a strip of land at side of Foresters’ Hall was of no value to hia trustees, who were prepared to pay 20s per anhuni for the. site of the fire escape steps.—Referred to sub-committee. Mr E. A. Maxwell, hon. secretary of the local football club, asked the council to have the recreation ground improved for next season by ploughing and top-dressing it.—Reserves Committee to report From the local branch of the National Bank notifying the overdraft rate of interest at 7 per cent., and asking the council-, to make request to the Government for permission to pay the increase.—Received: The Chief Inspector of Explosives wrote enclosing a model by-law in compliance with the explosive regulations.—Received. ■ : The Works Committee reported that the main streets and square had- been attended to, as usual, during the post fortnight; channels cleaned in Currie street and a crossing put in at Druids’ Hall; footpaths patched where necessary in Currie street, Scotia street, Grey street, Magnetic street, Wickiifio terrace, and Island terrace; the outlets from the sewer at the lower end of Ddly street cleared end cleaned; ashes carted and spread on path to the Crescent Hotel and on the path to the Sawyers’ Bay bridge; a number of concrete blocks made; about 6J chains of kerb and channelling completed in Harrington street, and about a chain of filling-in done between the edge of the footpath and the kerb, and the edges of the road in William street chipped and cleared. The committee recommended —(1) That tlie lamps be shifted from off the rotunda and placed one on the pole in Grey street at the bank, one on the pole at Johnston’s corner, and another on the pole at the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company’s office. The estimated cost of these alterations was. £3 17s, and an additional £3 per annum for the extra light. (2) That a large sign be placed at the entrance to the District High School in George street to warn motorists and others to drive slowly in case the children come out unexpectedly.— Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the expenditure for the fortnight totalled £349 lUs and the receipts £74 9s 3d. The forester liad completed preparing holes for the forest trees, and had started planting out. The committee recommended that the council agree to the transfer of the mortgage for property on corporation section 243 from D. Miller to the Otago Starr-Bowkett Society. Last week a visit was paid to the corporation reserves by Mr Morrison, Government Forester, who would forward a report on same shortly.—Adopted. The Gas and Water Committee reported that the works were doing well, the new oxide was still under test, and that several meters required attention. Several that had been out of order had been replaced, and when these defective meters were attended to the amount of unaccounted-for gas would be considerably reduced; but the only practical way was to make up tho unaccounted-for gas at the end of each year’s working. The water mains were scoured out ill Meridian street and Wickliffe terrace. The reservoir was overflowing, and all the creeks had been inspected, and were quite clean. The rainfall for July was 200 points.—Cr M’Lachlan thought the council should decide how much money should be accepted by the corporation on call and the amount for debentures.—The Mayor said it was really a ease of a corporation savings bank. —Report adopted.
