JOHN M'GLASHAN COLLEGE

A SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. Despite the inclement weather, the Coronation Hall, Maori Hill, was crowded'to its utmost capacity last night, when the pupils and friends of the John M’Glashan College gave a concert in aid of the Maori Hill .Presbyterian Church pulpit fund. Some 20 pupils of the St. Andrew’s College, Christenuroh, including tho members of their First Fifteen football team, which will play against the local college to-day, were present, and about 20 girls of the Columba College also attended. During the interval Mr A. G. Butchers, principal of tho college, extended to the visitors a hearty welcome and thanked all those who had assisted to make the concert the success it 'was.

The entertainment commenced with a pianoforte solo by Master K. Throp, who played a “Valso” tSibelius) in a manner winch earned him hearty applause. The Choir, comprising 40 boys, sang the following items during the course of the evening: " The Open Road " (Ambriose), “ Awake ” (Pelissier), two part songs—“ Violets ” (Cowen) and “Lullaby” (Brahms), ‘'Admirals All” and The Lobster Quadrille” (R. H. Macdonald) in a most enjoyable manner. A quartet, comprised of Misses B. Latta and M. Raine and Messrs R. Henderson and W. Kinmont sang* "Old Mother Hubbard ” (Wheeler) and) " Oh, Hush Thee My Baby ” (Sullivan) very pleasingly, and were rewarded with encores tor both items. A number of the school cadets under Sergeant R. Stewart gave an exhibition of musketry drill with great vigour. Another heartily applauded item was that given by tho junior boys who sang “Shadow March ” “ Sleepsinby.” and “ Time to Rise” (Del Riego). Mr R. Henderson received well-merited applause for his singing of “ 1 Did Not Know (Trotere), and Mr W. Kinmont, who rendered “ Rip Van Winkle,” shared his success. Miss B. Latta sang “Sunshine and Rain” (Blumenthal), and Miss M. Raine “Harvester’s Night Song ’* in a most capable manner. A very enjoyable mandolin solo by Mr G. Mitchell, who played “ Barcarolle ” (Offenbach), earned enthusiastic applause. A pianoforte duet by Messrs D. N. M'Gregor and H, Perkins, who gave “ Caprocante” (Wachs), was also well received. Messrs W. Scoular, D. Neil, A. Ronkine, and G. Milne comprised a quartet which sang “Four Jolly Sailormen” (German), which_ earned most hearty applause. The final item on the programme was “ The Emergency Band,” a farcical tragi-comedy in one act, by a number of the scholars, which created much amusement. Much credit is due to Mr T. S. Holme and his assistants for the manner in which the pupils had been prepared, and a great deal of the success of the concert was due to them. Misses R. Henderson and M. Raine and Mr T. S. Holme acted as accompanists in a most capable manner
