GRAND NATIONAL PROSPECTS. (From Odb Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 4

This morning’s arrivals at Riccarton from the North Island included Sturdee, Digger, Penury Rose, and Malahini. L. Hegarty is still an inmate of the hospital, though his condition is improving. He has lost the use of one arm.

The withdrawal of Dainty Step from the Winter Cup (says the Sun) will cause consternation in the ranks of early speculators. Her chance of annexing the big flat event was considered second to none. The Dunedin horses, Miss Muriel, Lochella, General Advance, Corn Rigs, and Killowen are expected at Riccarton this evening. Coroglen is now the only horse standing his ground in both the Grand National Steeplechase and the Hurdles race. Evidently he is to lie given a chance of landing the double, a feat that has not so far been accomplished in any one season. LAWN TENNIS. THE DAVIS CUP. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. (Received Aug. 4, at 8.80 p.m.) A joint committee of the Lawn Tennis Association and the All-England Club took a referendum among the Wimbledon championship players, asking their opinion, whether the champion should play through the tournament. Advice has been received by tho secretary of the Swimming Association that the datee for the championship have been fixed for February 4,6, 8, and 11. At the last New Zealand conference in Dunedin the allocation of the championships was discussed, when a vote was token, and Wellington and Napier were equally favoured. A final decision -was thereupon left to the New Zealand Council. This body has decided in favour of Wellington. * RUGBY FOOTBALL. TEAM FOR NEW ZEALAND. In the final of the district football cup fixtures played at Arrowtown yesterday afternoon, the scores were: Queenstown 14 points, Arrowtown 9 points. Queenstown thus retains the cup won by the 1914 team. Dr Ritchie Crawford, Invercargill, representing the Southland Rugby Football Union, acted as referee, Y.M.C.A. BOYS’ DIVISION. GYMNASTIC DISPLAY. An opportunity will bo afforded the public to-night to witness the splendid work carried on in the boys’ classes in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium. Mr Hanna is an expert in all physical work, and those who witnessed the circus recently conducted by him will be anxious to see further evidence of his work. The gymnastic, work is of a high standard, while the athletics and games will provide interesting entertainment to those present. The boxing class will be well represented, as two boys under Mr Churchill’s leadership will exhibit the art of self-defence. The two acrobats have developed special skill in their, tumbling acts, and have had numerous re/' quests for their turn. The clowns who were appreciated at the circus can be relied on to create laughter with something new. A very keep boslcet ball competition is in progress among the eleven boys’ clubs, and two 1 of the best teams will play during the display. An opportunity will also be given to the public to witness the skill of tho boys at ping-pong, when the eemi-final and final of tho ping-pong championship will be played. The musical part of the programme will be provided by the Y.M.C.A. orchestra. Only those closely interested know all that is being done for the boys of our city, and the public should ovail themselves of the opportunity of witnessing a small part of the large youth work being carried on in Dunedin. A proposal from the Palmerston North Club that a New Zealand grand national race be held in December was supported. Some of the clauses of the proposal arc that tho first prize for this be £25, that it bo open to all clubs throughout tho dominion, that each club make its own arrangements with regard to race point and liberation, and that the bird doing the highest velocity bo declared the winner.

A very pleasant fum.'tion look place on Saturday night, when trophies and certificates won during tlia year wore presented. The. president (Mr W. Esquilant) extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. Messrs A. Stevenson and A. Goodman won the gold modal for winners of the aggregate. During the evening Mr T. Brown, on behalf of the members, presented Mr W. Esquilant with a fountain pen in recognition of the splendid services he had rendered the club. Mr (Esquilant, in reply, thanked the members for their kindness, and said ho was always only too pleased to further the interest of the sport, and felt sure that the ensuing year would be the most successful the club had ever experienced.

TAIERI TENNIS CLUB,

The annual meeting of the Taieri Tennis Club was held last evening. There was a good attendance, over which Mr William Allan presided. The annual report was read and adopted. In presenting the annual report the retiring committee stated there was every reason to be proud of the club’s attainments during the past year, and congratulated members on the enthusiasm shown. It was gratifying to note the keenness of many of the younger players, who availed themselves of every opportunity to improve. The membership was steadily on the increase—3B women, 19 men, and 68 honorary members being on the roll. Keen competition was noticeable in the ladder events, and some exciting matches were played.. Badges had been purchased for competition in the combined doubles, and these proved’ to bo keenly coveted, and the club’s fund's were considerably augmented thereby. Both B and C teams deserved congratulations on the success achieved. The end of the season liad been marked by a record number of competitors taking part in the O.L.T.A. annual Easter tournament, and the committee congratulated those members who did so. In this regard special mention should be made of the Misses Collie (who were runners-up in the ladies’ handicap doubles) and Miss P. Guest, who had acquitted herself with distinction in the B Grade ladies’ handicap singles. This tournament is commended to club members. Thanks were due to the J ladies who so excellently attended to the catering. The finances of the club were sound, the balance sheet showing a credit of £46 10s lOd. The receipts for the year exceeded the expenditure by £34 9s Bd. The new court, the report started, had bsen unsatisfactory from the begdiming, and it now required attention. The retiring committee pointed out the need for (1) overhauling the netting wire around the grounds, (2) painting the pavilion, (3) screening of the wire netting with manuka scrub. Office-bearers were elected as follow; —President, Mr A. S. Kennedy; vice-presidents— Mr William Alton, Dr Snaw, Dr Spedding, Messrs M’Kmnon and M'Lachlan; secretary, Mr W. Harper; committee—Mrs Guest, Miss M’Leod, Miss Turnbull, Miss Binder, Messrs Olliver, Muirhead, and O’Brien; auditor Mr Olliver; delegate to association, Mr Harper; Selection Commitlce—Mrs Guest, Mr Olliver, Mr Harper. The opening date was left to the committee. The subscription was fixed at the same :rate as last year. It was decided to affiliate with the association, and the number of teams to be entered was left to the committee. Thursday evening was reserved for teams’ practice. Nine new members were elected.
