MARINE SCANDAL

SINKING OF BRITISH STEAMER

SCUTTLED BY ENGINEER.

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.

LONDON, August 2. At the Board of Trade’s inquiry into the sinking of the British steamer Spathari, off the Portuguese coast, on April 19, it was found that the chief engineer (Thomas Malley) wilfully scuttled the ship by opening the sea communications with the engine room, and that the master and the officers did not try to ascertain the cause of the leak, and prematurely abandoned the vessel. Malley’s certificate was cancelled, and that of the mastpr suspended for three months. There was no proof that the owner was inculpated.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
