Replying to a question in the House of Commons, Colonel L. C. Amery said that since the armistice the Government had sent ex-service men arid their families to the number of 54,145 overseas, of whom 17,197 went to Australia uni 9075 to New Zealand. The total expeaditnre was £1,038,000. It was borne entirely by the Home Government. • In the House of Commons tin Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Robed Horne) informed Mr J. R. dynes (Labour) that Cabinet had decided, in view of the departmental replies to the Treasury’s “ economy ” circular, to appoint a select committee of business men to deal with the reductions in expenditure. During the vacht racing at Cowes Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson fell overboard from a yawl, but he was able to keep afloat until he was rescued. 1
The Chamber of Deputies in Brussels adopted a Bill to enable women to become burgomasters, aldermen, and rate collectors. Married women must obtain their husbands’ permission before accepting posts. The Bill excludes women from the police service. Sir Eric Geddes, who is resigning his portfolio shortly, has undertaken to devote the whole of his time for the remainder of the year to the work (of a Select Committee on economy.
