The Rev. B. Metson presided over a largo attendance of members at a meeting of the St. Kilda Wesley Guild held last week, when Mr T. W. llernor gave an address on “The Value of Opposition.’’ The speaker dealt with the subject in a novel and interesting manner, illustrating his remarks by instances from the life of Josiuh Wedgwood, who, although besot by difficulties and opposition in his younger days, overcame these and eventually produced the beautiful china and pottery which now bear his mime. 'The opposition he encountered only served to develop his character. After Mr Homer's address an interesting discussion took place on the subject, many members taking part. Messrs A. and T. Burt’s annual ball took place in the Art Gallery Hall on Friday night. The room was tastefully decorated with drapery and festoons of greenery interspersed with coloured lights, and presented a pretty spectacle when about 120 couples took the floor to engage in the Grand March. During the evening a visit was paid by a party id University students, who'were invited to supper by -Mr \\. C. Burt, after which they engaged in a couplo of dances with the rest of the company, at the termination of which, giving a rousing cheer and a hearty good-night, they gracefully retired. Messrs M'Grath and Fm-lie were responsible for the decorations. The M.C.’s, Messrs Hobbs, Waller, Peterson, and MTherson, performed their dutjos in a very efficient manner, and Mr Fail and 1 1 is "committee were unsparing in their efforts to promote the comlort and pleasure of the company.
