MANCHESTER UNITY.

The Loyal Valley Lodge met, as usual, on the 3rd inst., N.G. Bro. W T . Jones presiding) over a good attendance of members and visiting brethren. Two new members were initiated, und one proposal for membership was received. Routine business being disposed of, tlie lodge adjourned to enable the Social Committer to carry out the entertainment of friends and well-wishers in the lower hall. This was successfully accomplished, a concert programme, which was supplied by Misses K. Henderson,vD. and F. Stokes. I’. West, and Shepherd, Messrs West, W. Henderson, J. Hutton, and C. W. Russell, being much enjoyed. Miss Daphne Stokes played the accompaniments. Supper was thou partaken of, after which dancing was indulged in until midnight. During the evening P.C. Bro. J. A. Robson gave a short resume of the growth of the M.U., sotting forth its aims, objects, and all that appertains to the organisation cf a successful friendly society. Memlrcrs of the Loyal Taieri Juvenile branch foregathered in largo at their meeting on Tuesday evening lost. N T .C. Bro. Massey presided, and had the pleasure of initiating two new- members. Indeed, hardly a meeting passes without the advent of new members, this being a phase on which members are particularly koen. Loyal Mosgiel Lodge, at its meeting ikist week, decided to again enter the shield competition. The lodge was well up last time, and expects to do even Iretter this time. The officers for the ensuing term —N.G. Bro. Kulmrts, V.G. Bro. W. Wyllie, E.S. Bro. J. Smollie, G.M. Bro. K. Fommcrvillc. Warden Bro. M. Hendry, and Guardian Bro. W. Callick—are keen on keeping the lodge in the forefront. One candidate was proposed for membership. if officers and members of tho Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge accord to N.G. Bro. Crawford ihe same support throughout his term of office as was accorded him, at the meeting on Tuesday last, his tenure of office as N.G. is going to bo a memorable one. One new member was admitted and four others proposed for membership. Financial assistance was granted to two elderly members in needy circumstances. Tho first official visit of tho term will be made to Loyal Centenary to-day. A good representation of the lodge being assured, a social dance in which lady friends and visiting brethren participated, occupied th? latter part of the evening. Tho Past Officers and Purple Degrees meeting will be held on August 2. Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge, Port Chalmers, held its usual fortnightly meeting on the sth inst., G.M. Bro. Keenan presiding over a good Attendance of members. One new member was admitted. The lodge resolved to have the photograph of P.G. Bro. W. Campbell inserted in the handbook. A euchre tournament, for which Bro. Campbell supplied the prizes, was won by Bros. Kemp and Clark. Bro. MTxenzic securing the booby prize. Well over 40 members attended the halfyearly summoned meeting of the Loyal Toko Juvenile branch, Milton. Competition for office was particularly keen, the successful aspirants being:—N.G., Bro. tv Wilson; E.S., Bro. D. Cockenll; G.M., Bro. M'Clymont; Warden, Bro. W. Cowie; Guardian, Bro. Pringle, who were installed in office by Brc. J. R. Wilson. Bro. Wilson afterwards addressed the lads on matters concerning the welfare of tho order to which they belonged. It was decided to hold a pound night at the next meeting. The matter is being taken up with vim, and a good meeting should eventuate. Loyal Milton initiated five new members at its last fortnightly meeting, which proves that the membership crusade is showing its results. Sonle 45 members were in attendance. On the summoned meeting being opened, a keenness for office was evinced, the successful candidates being:—N.G., Bro. Whytock; V.G., Bro. M'Hardy; E.S., Bio. A. E. Martin; Warden, Bro. W. T. Michelle; Guardian, Bro. F. J. Kcnnard; and G.M., Bro. Patterson. These, with the exception of, the N.G.-elect, were duly installed by G.M. Bro. Bowie, Bro. Whytock being too ill to attend. It wait resolved to Insert the photographs of P.G. Bro. W. F. Mills (the first past officer of the juvenile branch) and G.M. Bro. Patterson in the handbook. Per. Sec. Bro. 11. E. Ransome placed lucidly before the ledge the benefits accruing from competition for the District Shield. The matter, cn bring put to the meeting, was carried unanimously.

A large number cf members attended the half-yearly summoned meeting of Loyal Pioneer Juvenile Ledge, Kaitangatn, on June 29. The officers for the ensuing term were duly installed in their respective offices. An invitation was received from Loyal Toko juveniles to play a game of football at Milton. The president (Bro. C. Hislop) announced that the competition started at the previous meeting would bo resumed next lodge night. Loyal Pride of Kaitangata had a fair gathering cf members on the occasion of tho half-yearly summoned meeting, those appointed to office for tho ensuing six months being:—N.G., Bro. A. C. Gibson; V.G., Bro. C. Durham; E.S., Bro. G. S. M’Ghee; Warden. Bro. F. Johnson; and Guardian. Bro. S. Marshall. On tho lodge deciding to enter the competition, ths N.G. impressed on his officers the necessity of consistent effort. Ho said that if every officer put his heart into the work there was no reason why the lodge should not be successful. Bro. F. Johnson reported that tho social evening being run by the lodge was well attended, and satisfactory results were anticipated. The lodge decided to honour P.G. Bro. C. F. Hislop by placing lus photograph in the handbook.

Loyal Middlemarch Lodge is to be congratulated cn the enthusiasm of its members. The attendance at tho half-yearly summoned meeting was unusually large, returned soldier members being very much in evidence, some of whom live many miles from the place of meeting. The lodge during the ensuing term will be under tho guidance of a veteran in the person of P.G. Bro. Mcssent, the subordinate officers being V.O. Bro. H. Moore, E.S. Bro. 11. Leslie, Warden Bro. E. Preston. The meeting terminated with the usual/social function, refreshments being supplied by P.G. Bro. J. Turnbull.

Keen competition fcr office was a feature of the half-yearly summoned meeting of Loyal Tap'mui Lodge. N.G. Brc. J. Sim presided. One candidate was initiated and two others proposed for membership. N.G. tiro. Joseph Hay, V.G. Bro. Phil. Sim, E.S. tiro. J. Whiteloy, Warden Bro. S. Jenkins, and Guardian Bro. J. Kirk, the newly elected officers, were duly installed. P.P.G.M. Bro. Sherwood, of Mataura, and P.G. Bro. Peter Thomson, of Loyal Hand and Heart, assisting. In responding to the usual toast, P.P.G.M. Bro. Sherwood congratulated the lodge on the keen interest taken by members, particularly the younger ones, in tho affairs of the order, an augury of the future success of the lodge.
