BOXING

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS. Tlie tournament held by the Otago Association in connection with the local chain-’ pionships was concluded on Saturday night. The contests were of three rounds, each of three minutes. LIGHT WEIGHTS. Semi-final.

T. Harris 10.0 boat V. Cox (Invercargill) 10.0.

s_ox did most of the leading in the first round, rushing in and scoring with a, straight left and a right swing to the head. Iho first round was easily in favour of tno Invercargill boxer. The second round was of a stirring description. The two men sjtood toe to too, and used both hands. Cox was very effective with a straight left. 'Harris hooked a left to his opponent’s head, and Cox went down tor nine seconds. A right swing put the Invercargill man down for another nine seconds immediately after, and just before the end of the round ho was down for another four seconds. In the last round both men drove home straight loft in vigorous fashion, but Harris was the stronger of the pair and put Cox down for eight seconds and then another eight seconds. Harris finished much the fresher ,of the pair, Cox’s right eye being practically closed. On points there was not a great difference between the two boxers. Harris is a very hard-hitting boxer. Final. Harris heat L. Macdonald 10.0. Macdonald shaped well in the opening round, and most of Harris’s straight lefts were dodged .Macdonald scored well with a guod left to the head. A slashing contest took place in the second round, Macdonald fighting off Harris in good stylo and making him miss a lot. Macdonald scored well with a straight left and a following rigut swing. A great rally took place jn the third round, both men boxing in vigorous fashion. The decision did net moot with general favour, a section of the audience loudly hooting Macdonald could not have been far behind on points. He is a most promising boxer. FEATHER WEIGHTS. Final. W. I.eckie 8.11 beat W. Lucas 8.12. The contest was fought at a fast pace. Leckie was too clever for his opponent, and scored well in the clinches. Both men finished quits fresh. BANTAMS. Final. L. Drew 8.2 beat W. Rowe 8.4. The two lads fought gamely, and kept the pace up right through. The decision vent to Drew, but there was not much difference between the two boxers. WELTER WEIGHTS. Final. F. Harvey (Invercargill) 10.6 boat S. J. Mackio 10.5. An uninteresting contest. SPECIAL BOUT. Six rounds, each of two minutes. W. j. Sycamore (Invercargill) 9.4 beat W Watt 9.3. , Sycamore was the stronger man of the two, and had the tetter of the exchange? Neither boxer showed any great science, and a lot of clinching took place. SPECIAL BOL T. Six rounds of two minutes. A. Goodman beat G. Smith. A good, clean contest took place, m wh.ch ihero was not much difference in points between the two men.
