COLLISION BETWEEN STEAMER AND SAILER.
REPAIRS BEING EFFECTED.
With regard to (ho collision between the steamer Cain; and the barque Rothesay Bay, the latter had just dropped anchor when the impact took place, her place of anchorage being in ihr channel of! Rocky Point, near Carey's Bay, where she was awaiting the flood tide in order to be towed up to Dunedin yesterday morning. The Calm wna making for the Heads on her way to Wellington, via Bluff. Apparently the Calm struck the bow of the sailer with groat force; so heavily that, the Rothesay Bay, it is stated, heeled over to an alarming angle; a member of the crow of tho Calm being thrown out of his hunk. The damages done to tho two vessels have been already described. Yesterday the crew of the Rothesay Bay was engaged in making tho fore-topmast secure ; lowering tho fore-top-gallant yard, and housing the fore-top-gallant mast, It is intended to take the Rothesay Bay alongside the dock head at Port Chalmers and put ashore the damaged bowsprit, and jibboom before she is towed up to Dunedin. It is possible she may come up to Dunedin to-day. The Calm has her how badly damaged, tho plates being cut through. After the collision tho vessel steamed to the Bowen pier, and a start was made yesterday to repair damages. It is diffbult to estimate the value of the damage done In tho two vessels, but if, is roughly assessed at £2OOO.
It is understood that tho Rothesay Bay had her regulation lights, riding lights, burning at tho time the collision took place. It is expected to despatch the Calm, whoso cargo was not, damaged, about Wednesday for Bind to resume her originally intended voyage.
A preliminary departmental inquiry will probably he commenced hy the local superintendent of marine this morning.
