UNEMPLOYED IN AUCKLAND.

POSITION BECOMING ACUTE.

(Thom Oub Special Coebespondent.) AUCKLAND. July 8. The acuteness of the unemployment problem has been reflected in several ways daring fho last few days. It is stated that of the 1600 members of the Waterside Workers’ Union only 181 were employed during the present week. The membership of the union increased during the last four months from 1303 to 1600. The annual election of officers of the union, which is to take place in about a fortnight’s time, is already exciting the interest of members. The stream of applicants for work haa increased during the last few days at the Government Labour Bureau. A fair number of these are young men who have been used to light work in factories. The bureau is taking advantage of every available. source to place the men, but very little impression is being made on the total, for as fast as parties are sent to employment fresh applications come forward.
