MR HOWARD ELLIOTT AND HIS CRITICS.

TO THE eiJITOU. Snt, —I am glad to see it stated that tho Rev. Howard Elliott has challenged any accredited representative c£ the Roman Catholic Church to meet him for public debate on tho statements he has made alfectiug that Church. Tho challenge should bo at onco accepted, and a committee appointed on cither side to make arrangements for tho debate. If tho charges for admission were ss, 2s, and Is a substantial sum would result, and might bo made available to relievo cases of distress in the city, of whiclt there are many just now. It will not do to decline acceptance of Mr Elliott’s challenge on the ground that his character is disliked by Catholics. That will bo regarded by the general public as an unworthy subterfuge. Mr F.lliott has a great party of religious people behind him who admire his character very much. If the Roman Catholics refuse to accept h:g challenge it will be because they fear the truth. Then there is tnc Official Labour party. Mr Kliiott lias made most damaging charges against that party, and, so far os I know, the party has never dared to challenge him to meet one of its Parliamentary representatives for public discussion. Is the party afraid of truth? Mon wim are armed with truth do not fear discussion. They eve as bold as lions, and roadv to face' any foe.—l am, etc., July 8. OnsERVEit.

Sill,— “Keep Peace” in to-day’s issue, s-ays: “ii Air Elliott reckons that ho is speaking t.ho truth . let him keep his lectures to himself.” X would advise “Keep Peace” and his like to come 10 the mootings and challenge the utterances ol iVl.r Klholt, and 1 am sine that Mr Elliott would answer any of his sialcnients to the satisfaction of all. “Keep Peace” says ho his many Catholic, frit nils. I hope so. Wo arc ail Catholics, but not Roman Catholics, 1 suppose, however, ho refers to Roman Catholics, as he says he knows a good deal about them. They are far truer to faith than most Protestants. Quito ao; let “Keep Pc-ivco” stick to his opinion, _ is wus liorn in him A straw shows which way the wind blows. “Keep Peace” can beep his advice to the people who attend Mr Elliott's meetings, ’they are i*Jl_ qualified to judge for themselves, and if there is anything that will broaden their imnds it is to be learned by attending such mootings as are conducted by the P.P.A. —I am, et °’’ Donald Henddbson.

A mild fensation was caused in Waverlcy recently (reports the Patea Press) when it became known that Mr R. Hunger's motor car had disappeared from its garage during the previous night. The cur was safely housed on Saturday, but on Mr Hunger going to tho garage yesterday morning lio found that someone had entered tho ‘building and removed the cur. Constable Armour was immediately made aware of the fact, and lost no time in finding a clue, with tho result that the ear was returned at night. It is nndcrsiond that Court proceedings will, in duo course, bo taken against tho joy riders.
