“DARBY AND JOAN.”
“ Darby and Joan,’’ the reproduction of Hall Caine’s novel, has been transferred to the Grand and Plaza Theatres, where it was shown on Saturday. The plot is centred in the Isle of Man, and some beautiful little pieces of scenery are introduced. The producer, Mr Percy Nash, has presented a tale of dignity, of pathos, and of real old-world charm. Ivy Close fills the part of Sheila Moore, whose love refuses to be shaken by the utmost adversity; Derwent Hall Caine, the author’s son, plays the part of Patrick Garry, afterwards Sir Patrick, whose love is no less passionately devoted and no h'ss heroically unselfish than that of his sweetheart. The villains of the picture are Gayle Moore, Sheila’s father, and Widow Moore, Patrick’s mother, but their evil is human and ugly, and their wickedness serves as a foil for the beautiful ideal love of Sheila and Patrick. The supports ar* interesting.
