COST OF LIVING

DECLINE DURING FEBRUARY. FOOD PRICES MAINLY AFFECTED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, March 18. (Received March 18, at 7.20 p.m.) Official indent figures on the cost of living show a decline of 10 points during February. They stood at 141 per cent, above pre-war rates at March 1, compared with 176 per cent, at November 1, when they had reached the maximum. ; It is calculated that a 35 points’ decline’ represents 2s 6d in the pound. The reduction is mainly in food prices, but clothes and personal household necessities contribute to the decline. The fall considerably affects wages which are on a sliding scale basis. The railwayman from April 1 are entitled to 4s less weekly, equivalent to £7,200,000 annually off the national bill.—A. and N.Z.’ Cable.
