LAW DEBATING SOCIETY

The annual business meeting of the Dunedin Law Debating Society was held in the lecture room. Supreme Court Buildings, on Wednesday evening. Mr H. E. Barrowclough was in the chair,* and the attendance promised a successful year, there being about 40 students present. The’annual report showed that last year four debates, an oratorical contest, and a mock trial were held, and an • interesting lecture was given by Mr S. Solomon, K.C., on “General Points in the Law of' Procedure.” It was noted with satisfaction that the University Inter-faculty Debating Shield had again appeared. on the walls of the lecture room, it having been won last year by Messrs H. E. Barrowolough and G. T. Baylee. Mr Baylee was also con gratulate’d on diaving won the trophy competition last year, for which he received books to the value, of £2 2s. The balance sheet showed the society to have in hafid the satisfactory credit balance oi £4 11s Id. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year;—President, Mr Justice Sim, vice-presidents—the law lecturers of the University—vjz., Messrs J. B. Callan, jun., A. C. Stephens, F. B. Adams, H. S. Adams, H. L. Cook, A. G. Neill, W. G., Hay, J. Lang, and H. E. Barrowolough; committee—Messrs 6. T, Baylee (chairman), G. I. M'Gregor, H. K. Emanuel, G. V. Murdoch, H. J. S. Grater, and F. J. D.‘ Rolfe; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr K. G. Roy. ; It was decided that debates commence early in April, and be held weekly instead of fortnightly, so that the syllabus would not extend till near the November examinations. At the close of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring chairman, Mr Barrowolough, and he was congratulated by the society on his recent appointment to the position of lecturer in practice and procedure.
