CITY POLICE COURT

Wednesday, February 16. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M.) Drunkenness. —A first offender was fined 20s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Hugh Coulter failed to appear to answer chargee of drunkenness and using obscene language.—Sub-inspector Murray said defendant was a ship’s fireman.' He used the words when he was being arrested and put into a car, hut they were not very bad. The captain of the Essex had asked that the man should he allowed to sail with the ship, so that it would not be delayed, and he asked leave to withdraw the charge.—The Magistrate agreed to this course being taken. Eemandod.—William Scholes was charged with forging a cheque for £5 10s on the Bank of iNew Zealand, purporting to be signed by J. Lindsay, and causing- Christina Bigby to act upon it as if it were/genuine.— Chief Detective Bishop said accused had been brought down from Faparoa. There were several other chargee pending against him.— Accused was remanded till February 25. Maintenance.—Andrew Walker Bremner was charged with the disobedience of a maintenance order for the sunpport of his wife and two children. The arrears amounted to £7 10s. —Defendant said his left arm was useless, and he found it very hard to get suitable employment. His wages as a hotel porter in Wellington were £2 10s a week. Ho produced a medical certificate' stating that he suffered from chronic rheumatoid arthritis, and was at times, incapacitated for work.—He was sentenced to two months’ hard labour.

Tlwft of Paper.—William Campbell Smith pleaded guilty to the theft at Dunedin, on January 17, of 2owt of white paper, valued at £6 4s, the property of the Otago' Daily Times and Witness Newspapers Company.— Chief Detective Bishop said he had received complamts from the manager of the company that, the paper had been missed, and that afternoon Detective Palmer arrested accused Accused was a cripple for life, as the result »f an accident.—Accused told the magistrate he took the paper to pay a debt. In a written statement he admitted that on January 10 he went to the office of the company and took out of the cellar 2owt of paper, which he sold <m January 17, to a butcher J- McCauley, for £2 10s.—Accused was fined £5, and ordered to pay the value of the paper (£5 4s) to the owners within 10 days.
