NEW DEFENCE SCHEME

RETIREMENT OF COLONEL M‘DONALD.

(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 1,

The new defence scheme, under which the military districts of the dominion are reduced from tour to three, came into force to-day. The whole of the South Island now becomes one military district, with district headquarters at Christchurch. Lieutenant-colonel T. W. M'Donald, who has been in command of the Otago district, retires on superannuation. A considerable number of compulsory retirements are taking place in the Defence Force, as the result of the Government’s policy of economy in military expenditure, and amongst those who are leaving the Staff Corps are some who ere well known for their association for several years with defence work in New Zealand, and also for their active service records. It is understood that the three districts will, at least for the time being, retain their present commanders: Wellington, Colonel C. W. Melville; South Island, Colonel R. Young; 'Auckland, Colonel H. M. Potter. . . . . Another officer retired is Major H. M. W. Richardson, D. 5.0., Who obtained a commission in the Boer war, and served from 1916 to the end of the late war.
