SWIMMING

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The Otago' swimming championships were continued in the munidpal baths oh Saturday evening, and were witnessed by a large attendance ( of the public. The competitions were under- the management of a sub-committee (Messrs H. W. Kirkwood, E. H. S. Batchelor, R. Paul, and W. JenJkins)_ of the Otago Centre, and these enthusiasts, together with others, put in a lot of strenuous work to secure the . success that was attained. It was intended to have a ladies’ fancy diving competition' but this fell _ through on account of only one entry having been received. A water polo match between teams calling themselves the Otago representatives and the possibles created a deal of interest and amusenfent, and after a strenuous contest was won by the former by 6 goals to 4. The, following are the other results; 100 Yards Junior Handicap (under 17 years).—First heat: L. H. Johnson, scratch, 1; P. Kerr, ssec, 2. Second heat: R. Colder, 12sec, 1; R. A. Meikle, scratch, 2. Final: Johnson 1, Colder 2. Time, Imin 37sec. Nine started. Won by a yard, after a very spirited contest. 100 Yards Jnterclub Handicap.—Five started out of nine entries, and the judges were unable to separate R. B. Wheeley, 4seo, and L. Kronfeld, scratch. Time, Imin 1 3-ssec.

220 Yards Championship.—E. J. Dawson 1, A. .Perry 2. Five started, but only two finished. Won easily. Time, 2min 55sec. Fancy Diving (under N.Z. championship rules). —This event was especially interesting, as the seven competitors gave a variety of styles of diving. Of these the judges selected as equal E. G. James and W. Cunningham, and decided that of these two the neater diver from the top board would be placed first. James won. Ribbon Dive.—W. ■ Cunningham was the only competitor who did not touch the ribbon in diving, and thus won. 66 2-3 Yards Ladies’ Interclub Handicap. —Miss M. Jones, scratch, 1; Miss H. Miller, Isec, 2. A splendid race between five competitors. Won by a touch. Time, Imin 15 2-sseo.

440 Yards Otago Championship.—E. J, Dawson 1, A. Perry 2. Three started, Won easily by r the length of the baths. Time, 6min 54sec.

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The following will represent Otago at the New Zealand swimming championships, commencing in Dunedin next Saturday:— 100 Yards, E. J. Dawson; -220 Yards, E. J. Dawson; 440 Yards, E. J. Dawson; BSO Yards, E. J. Dawson; One-mile, E. J; Dawson ; ,220 Yards Breast Stroke, J. L. M'lndoe; Diving—E. G. James, J. B. Doake. W. Cunningham; Girls’ Intermediate Championships (75 yards and 100 yards), _ Miss. M. Jones; Boys’ Intermediate Championships (100 yards, 220 yards, 880 yards), A. Perry.
