NOTES ON THE RACING. (From Ouh Special Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 29. The midsummer meeting at Riccarton is usually identified with genial sunshine, a fairly firm track, a small attendance, but, nevertheless, an enjoyable and quiet day’s racing. By way of contrast torrential rain set in about 8 a.m. on Saturday and continued in a heavy downpour all the morning, making a postponement apparently an absolute certainty. The stewards, however, decided to carry on, and in doing so came to a bad decision. The attendance appeared to be a record for meagreness in numbers for Riccarton, and the track was so bad that some of the horses could not gallop on it. and the fields were quickly spread out over a considerable amount of ground. Never in the history of Riccarton were so many won by such large margains, and the “mud-larks” had a great outing. In fact. Winning Hit’s win was probably the easiest ever seen at the finish of a flat race at Riccarton. Other very easy winners were Dutch Courage, Strayshot, Clean Sweep, Tatau Tatau, and Royal Stag. The onlv winner who had to be shaken up was Will Oakland, who beat the unluckv Foo Chow. Despite the rain and the mud the sport was interesting, but it gave no line to form, although matters would in all probability have panned out the same if the running had taken place on top of the ground. Strayshot at once took up the running in the Hornby Handioan, and led King Star in the back stretch. Going to the far turn Whipcord moved up, and most of the others could , not act in the sloppy going. Strayshot was half a dozen lengths in front of Whipcord as they turned into the straight, and, going on. won by four lengths. Glentanner was about 15 lengths away, third, a short. length in front of King Star. Starters: Glentanner, Whipcord, King Star, Manawapango, Strayshot, Endure, Warform. Bonny Mao and Fabrinade drew out from Volkova and Counterstroke in the Trial Stakes, in which the field was quickly spread out. Counterstroke drew up in the straight, and. going on. won by over three lengths from Bonny Mao, who beat Fabrinade by a head. Sans Souci was a moderate fourth, and .Volkova next. Starters: Counterstroke, Starlike. Sans Souoi, Motor Patrol, Volkova. Chinatown, Fabrinade, Adopted Bonny Mac, Horatius, Rippingill, Happy Captain. Pussyfoot, Loch Weir. The' three in the Middle Park _ Plate jumped out together, and after Winning Hit and Petunia had run together for a couple of furlongs the former came clean away, and won by fully 15 lengths, Petunia beating Princess Pat by half a length. Starters; Winning Hit, Petunia, Princess Pat.
Royal Stag was a strong order for the Midsummer Handicap, the stable having a good run naturally helping to build up support. They moved out together, and Royal Stag, under a pull, made the running with Marc Antony, the pair being about three lengths in front of Warlove, with Warlike still further back as they ran along the back. As they turned for home Warlove moved up to Royal Stag, and had him under pressure, but iust as sho threatened real danger she threw on her bead and declined the battle, and Roval Stag went on to win by nearly two lengths. Marc Antony was four lengths away, third, iust beating Warlike. Starters: Royal Stag, Warlove, Warlike. Marc Antony. Kilfane and Palestrina collided at the rise of the harrier in the Lyttelton Plate, and Tatan Tatau and Dame Fortune were smartest out. When they hit the straight Kilfane was bringing up the rear. Tatau Tatau came clean away, and won bv six lengths from Palestrina, who heat Humboldt by three lengths. Corn Cake was rext, and Kilfane, who ran close up inside the distance, afterwards stopped to nothing. Starters: Palestrina Kilfane, Tatau Tatau, Humboldt, Corn Cake, Dame Fortune. Algidlis and Jazz led out from Prince Hal in the Craven Plate, Counterattack getting knocked hack on the rails. Algidus and Jazz_ were joined by Link Up as they straightened for home, but at the distance Clean Sweep came through oh the rails and won comfortably by over two lengths from Prince Hal, who beat Royal Mac by half a length. Onslaught was close up, fourth, followed by Algidus and Link Up. Royal Mao ran a good race, as he was second I«st into the straight in a well strung out field, hut nothing had a chance with the winner. Counterattack got a bad passage. Starters: Counterattack. Royal Mac, Prince Hal, Onslaught (coupled with Clean Sweep), Carmine, Grcokson, Algidus, Tantalus, Link Up, Koesian, Jazz.
Dutch Courage and Footlights jumped out in front of Filagree in the Halswell Handicap, and Fabisco at once tailed off Turning for home Orange Mart drew up to Filagree. Inside the distance Dutch Courage came on and won comfortably by three lengths from Orange Mart and Filagree, who dead-heated. Bondage was next. Orange Mart was boring in on Filagree as- they came up the running or the latter could have been second. In fact there were good grounds for a protest. In the Post Handicap backers went strongly for Will Oakland. He and Braid led the way along the back, where Foo Chow got chopped back last. Braid also got pushed back before reaching the straight and in the run home Will Oakland stalled off a run from Foo Chow, and beat him a good half length. Foo Chow was once again an unlucky horse, as a good nm m the race would have made him a winner Oaverock finished about six lengths away' and Comment was next. So ended one of the poorest day’s sport ever seen at Riccarton.
