The Essex, from New York, via Panama, arrived at Lyttelton on Saturdaq. Rain was pretty general throughout the dominion.,on Saturday, and work was stopped at many of the ports. The Tofua left Auckland on Friday night for Sydney, whence she will return to Auckland. The Government steamer Tutanekai left at noon on Saturday for the Bluff and West Coast Sounds.

The document discloses that after allowing for depreciation and making an allocation to the insurance funds (raising the total of the' latter to £2,600,000), there remained a credit of £772,607. The net profit for the vear to September 80 amounted to £657,377. Last year the net gain was shown as : £611,858. after transferring £1,000,000 to various funds and providing for depreciation. The appropriations endorsed at last month’s meeting comprised:—s per cent, dividend on preferred stock, £152,000; 12 per cent, dividi nd, and 8 per cent, bonus on the deferred stock, free of income tax (of which 2i per cent, on preferred and 6 per cent, on deferred were paid in Hay last), £508,668; a balance of £111,939 being carried forward. .
