QUEEN’S AND KING EDWARD THEATRES.
Drury Lane melodramas leave nothing lacking in the shape of excitement, and the particular brand of' villainy supplied is of the double-dyed variety. In those respects “The Sporting Duchess,” now being screened at the Queen’s and King Edward Theatres, fully maintains its reputation. While one might wonder at the simplicity of some of the characters falling into such very apparent traps as were set for them, it must be admitted that there was a certain speciousness about them that prevented the episodes' from being extremely improbable. The scenes for the most are laid at an old manorial seat, and are exceedingly good. An admirable view of a racecourse and a race is also given. Miss Alice Joyce fills the role of the much injured heroine, and she acts will in keeping with the part, being especially successful in the more emotional passages which abound. She is well supported by the other principals, and the grouping is always animated. The supports are strong, including an episode of ‘‘The Mystery of 13,” a series of views of ice-yachting in Sweden, and a Topical Budget.
