(Fkom Oob Own Cobbespondent.) | QUEEXSTOWN, October 26 At a meeting ot the Lake County A. and 1. {society, held- on Saturday, the date of tile show was lixed lor March 23 next. The canvassers reported that liberal support had been promised m the direction of donations exhibits, and increased membership. This encouragement led to the committee making increases, in the prizes in several sections during the process of redrafting the schedule. Owing to the exigencies of the war no show nas been held under the auspices of the society for four years. Glorious weather prevailed in Queenstown tor Labour Day, and the holiday was thoroughly enjoyed by the unusually large number of visitors who arrived in Queenstown ironi the cities and neighbouring goldlields towns. The tennis match between teams representing/ Ctomwell and Queenswas played -'on the Tourist Department s courts, the former proving victorious in 14 out of 19 games. InyeiCitrgill cricketers beat a local eleven on the Recreation Reserve with an innings to the good. The opening of the Wakatipu Bowling Club season took place on the Tourist Department's. green under genel-ally auspicious conditions, eight rinks being engaged. ~ocal and visiting bowlers were loud in their praises of the state of the green, and under the care of the new and capable superintendent (Mr A. Hesketh) it is anticipated that it will comoare more than favourably with any playing area of the Kind in the dominion this season. Dr Yalintine, Inspector-general of Hospitals and Chief Health Officer of the dominion, accompanied by Dr M'Kibbin, interviewed the Arrowtown residents on Saturday, and heard them on the question of a doctor for the Arrowtown district. Dr Valintine was of opiuion that a doctor was not necessaiy, seeing there were already two men practising at the other end of the district, and he strongjy recommended, the appointment of a district nurse-midwife instead. It was stated at the meeting that upwards of £300 had been guaranteed by the residents towards the support of a doctor. but Dr Yalintine franldv expressed the opinion that the sum whieh.it would be possible to offer would not secure the class of medical man that would meet with the approval of the Health Department. However, he was prepared to recommend a subsidy of £140 to £200. towards the medical scheme, ljut any appointment made, either of a doctor or nurse, would have to be approved by the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board a'nd the Health Department. The matter will be referred to the board for its decision.
