Among the greatest consolidating influences with mankind was that inspiration b 7 » .high ideal which lifted one above petty difterences and releases activity for nobler achievement. But the most important factor in progress was how to train the ' children. The surest way to change the present world into a commonwealth of nations was to change the moral outlook of the children by encouraging fellowship as against aggression love as against hatred, and social service as agamst selfish interest. The era of social reconstruction demanded more than ever direct means of endowing the child with an understanding of his or her civic responsibilities and with motives to express his or ner personality in 6ocial service. At the conclus:on of the lecture tho Roslyn branch presented Miv Johnson with a small token of its appreciation. Mr L. H. Osborn in making the presentation, paid tribute to tho high standard of tho lectures throughout the year. Not only had Mr Johnson a great grasp of his subject, but he possessed in a very high degree that rare faculty of imparting knowledge and of winning the ho/irt and spirit of the student His lectures, dealing as they did with a difficult subject, had been presented in a most interesting and lucid form. Other speakers also paid tributes to Mr Johnson and expressed their personal thanks for benefits they had received through the class. A resolution of appreciation was also passed, which is to be forwarded on to the District Council. Mr Johnson suitably replied, stating that he had been helped by the kindly spirit and receptivity of the class. It was stated that during the recess' tho Workers' Educational Association intended organising educational visits to the factories museum, and other places. ' The monthly meeting o f the Albany Street School Committee was held on Tuesday, Mr A. Demnster being in the chair. There wore also present Messrs J. H. Wilkinson, P. Findluy, W. Tyrio, J. Abernethy,. A. Burk. and J. Main. The head master's report showed that there had been, and was still, much sickness among the pupils, insomuch that the roll number

was 651, with a n average attendance for tho past month of only 540. The school band had met with success in the competitions. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr M'Laren and congratulate his band (Oamaru South School) on its becoming the winners b'f the cup in the B grade. Mr W. Tyrie reported on his visit to the school, having noted several necessary improvements. The amount to the credit of depositors in the school savings bank was £491. Mr W. Jacobsen (chairman) presided, and was supported by several members of the committee, teachers, and a few friends of the band. After the supper interval the Chairman congratulated the band on its performance in gaining a creditable position in the recent; competitions, and trusted the boys would rally round ther conductor (Mr Himburg) and eventually gain premier honours. Messrs Harris, Adess, Robertson, and Ironside also spoke, each emphasising the fact that the school committee would do all in its power to advance the interests of the hard. Mr Himburg thanked the committee for the entertainment and for the interest shown At the close of the function the boys marohed along tho Main road, playing lively airs, to the King Edward Pictures. Mr D. W. Burn.was the speaker on Sunday evening at the Theosophical Hall in Dowling street. He opened his address with a brief outline of the story of the famous attic robber, Procrustes, who made the victim of his nefarious trade fit into . a bed by stretching those who were too short, and lopping the limbs off those who were too tall. These old myths, ho said, were not merely fairy tales, as they appeared to casual observation, but almost always embodied a fact. In the present instance Procrustes was really a type, he was "Every Man for everyone had a certain mental, moral, and national outlook on life, and to thoso who did not conform to it Procrustean methods were applied. The speaker said that though the basis of all life was the 'Ono Life," yet individuals were of widely differing types, and the more intensely a man was showing forth the dominant traits of his own ray "or type, the less he was able to understand his brother who was as intensely following his own lines. We owed to all perfect tolerance, realising that though the paths are divergent, the goal is one and each reaches divinity along his own path. ' -
