BOWLING.

OPENING OF TTna SEASON. The Bahnaoewen Bowling Club opened its groan for the season on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a very largo gathering of members, visitors, and lady friends. Included m tihe visitora were the ex-vi copresident of the New South Wales Bowling Association and » prominent member of orto of the Brisbane clubs. Theso two gentlemen weru motored round by Mr W. G. Hay (president of the Dunedin Bowling Centre), and other members of the centre, to the various greens which were commencing operations for the season. Mr P. Jones (president of the Balmaoerwen Club) expressed pleasure at Beoing bo many present, and cordially welcomed the visitors. In the absence from Dunodin of Mrs Jones, Mrs KiTklond, who has been a prominent supporter: of the chib, and to whom the club is indebted for the billiard table installed during the winter, rolled the first bowl. The groan. 1 thanks to the skilful work of Mr W. Thompson (g-rojnicepor) was in excellent condition, and the time-honoured game, President v. Vice-president, proved thoroughly; enjoyable. There* was a good attendance of miombors «md a fair sprinkling of visitors at tho official opening of the Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon. Mr P. M'Chskill (president of the olub) and Mrs M'Caskill mado members and visitors alike nt home, and pro vex]' a hospitable host and hostess. Tho contest, President .v. Vicepresident, proved a most enjoyable one, and during' its progress ladies, players, and virf<ors were entertained at afternoon tea. The ; Anderson's Bay Club'a green was oroenedt for the season on Saturday raider the most auspicious conditions and before a large number of members and visitors from the vtsnotis city clubs. The croon mas in eocoellefit condition, and the club has every reason-to lo.k forward to a most successful season. A hearty to all nnd sundry was extended by tho president (Mr A. Orr), who invited any visitors to make use of the club's isrreen when thev felt inclined. Mr' W. Jacobsen. reprew-ntins the Dunedin ' Cenh-eJ also spoke briefly. The | Taseri Bowling Club was favoured I with beautiful weather on Saturday for the opening of the bowling season. a large attendance of bowlers, visitors, and lady supporters. The Mosgiel High School fifo and drum band (under Mr Kaye) supplied a programme of music, which was muoh .appreciated. At the appointed hour the band opened proceedings with a verse of the National Anthem, and Mr A. Cameron (president) declared tho green open. He welooined the visitors, and hoped all would enjoy a pleasant afternoon. Mr Cameron made feeling reference to the death since last bowling season of Dr Allan, who for so many years had played a prominent part in bowling. Mrs Cameron rolled up the first bowl, and play commenced for the afternoon. The green was. in perfect order—thanks to the Green Committee and the oaretaker. The ladies provided afternoon tea at am interval in the game. The Roslyn Club opened its season on Saturday in the presence of a laigo number of visitors. The ladies also turned out in . force and helped materially to brighten tho proceedings. Several members of the local oentre were present for portion of the afternoon, and also a party from the Caledonian Club. Mr Matheson (president) welcomed the. visitors, and trusted that they would have a pleasant afternoon. He referred to the capital condition of the green, and to the sood work that Mr Walsh (the greenkeeper) had put in to pot it ready for the opening day He then called on Mrs Matheson to roll the first bowl, and declared the green orpen fbr the season. The match. v. Vice-president., wcw played, and ramlted in a victory for the former. Mrs Ma<hef<jn had charge of the refreshments, and, with the aid of several younsr ladies, the visitors were horoitnblv entertained.
