IMPORTANT WORKS

THE OTIRA TUNNEL. NORTHERN RAHAVAY CONSTRUCTION. (From Our Own Cobhespondent.) WELLINGTON, October 24. The Public Works Statement does not disclose tho main works that, under the new policy, arc likely to be pushed to a conclusion. There will probably be one in the South and two in the North Island. There can bo little or no doubt that the Otira tunnel will bo the one in the South Island. It is a work involving a large expenditure. In tho North Island the principal works likely to be singled out for early completion are tho Tauranga and East Coast section of the East Coast Main Trunk line, and possibly a section of the North Auckland Main Trunk line. Both lines will open up a lot of fertile land, more especially the former line, which will tap the Rangitaiko swamp and the lands about Whakatane (where the freezing industry is being developed), along with tho valleys of the Urewera Country adjoining.
