Mr A. Murdocii left by the second express yesterday lor Wellington. Miss M. H. Johnston has been appointed mistress of the lotara. School. Air D. Reid (Milton) was a passenger from the north by the through express yesterday. Mr W. A. Flavell, general manager- ol the Westport Coal Company, arrived by the first express from the north yesterday. Mr C M. Benzoni, the railway engineer for the district, arrived in Dunedin on Monday afternoon to take up his duties here. Mr F. J. Robieson, officer in charge of the local Tourist Department, is at present suffering from illness, and Mr T. Pike is in charge. Mr T. H. Macky, one of the principals of the firm of Macky, Logan, and Caldwell, Ltd., was a passenger for the north by the second express yesterday. • Mr W. H. Hagger, Conciliation Commissioner, was a passenger for InvercargiU by the second express yesterday, where he will hold sittings of the council and return hero again to-morrow. The Rev. C. H. Ritchie, accompanied by Mrs Ritchie, arrived by the first express from the north yesterday, Mr Ritchie served as a chaplain in the North Sea'during the war on the cruisers Donegal and Blake, and will now spend a few months in tho dominion. Mr A. Cerutty, local manager for tho Huddart, Parker Company, will leave on Monday next for Auckland to relieve Mr D. Ryan, the corrrpany*s manager in that city, for about four weeks. Mr Ryan will proceed to Australia on holiday leave Mr A. O. Owen, who has been Government ietectrioa.l engineer in Christchtirch and in charge of the Lake Coleridge hydroeleotrical scheme for some months, has resigned from the Public Works Department, and will practise as an electrical engineer privately in New Zealand. Viscount Jellicoe will be the fourth' naval officer who has occupied the position of Governor of New Zealand. The others were: Captain Hobson, tho first Govornor of New Zealand; Captain Fitzroy, known to science as the inventor of the Fitzroy barometer; and the late Earl of Glasgow. A well-known and very old Cromwell family, that of Mr John Fleming, yesterday suffered a double bereavement (wires our correspondent). His wife, aged 78 years, and second daughter. Nan, parsed away within an hour of each other. The wife had been in failing health for some time, but the daughter's illness waa only recent. Mr and the late Mrs, Fleming c-%me to the dominion and the Cromwell district 55. years ago, and with tho familv were engaged in farming at what is now known as Ripponvale. until their disposing of tho property to the Development Company, when they took un their residence m Cromwell.
