' AUCKLAND, September 28. A respectably-dressed woman, about 55 years of age, whose name •is not known, made a, determined effort to drown herself in the tido at St. Mary's Beach this afternoon. The tide was low, and she ran across the and, fully clothed, waded out, and throw herself beneath the waters, rolling and struggling ottt towards the dconer waters. A gentleman who happened to "bo on the beach rushed into the water, and dragged the woman out in a state of hysterical collapse. '
(Per United Peess Association.) THAMES, September 28. . A returned soldier named Walter Cloke fell into thq Ngarua Creek at Kaihere, Hauraki Plains, this morning, and was drowned. The deceased, who was employed in the Lands Department, suffered from the results of gas, and -was apparently unable to struggle out. His wife gave the alarm, but when the body was recovered life was extinct.

It has been reported to the police that a contractor named J. Patterson was killed during blasting operations on road formation work beyond Wairoa. No details aro available.
Tho Superintendent of Police was informed yesterday by wire from Constable Weir, of Balclutha, that a man named Andrew Brown... a carpenter, 60 years of age, had died suddenly at his home the previous evening. . Tho coroner has been informed of tho occurrence, and an inquest is to be hold. i
