TRADE UNION CONFERENCE

A LARGE ATTENDANCE.

A conference of local trade unions, called by the Otago Labour Council to consider the. welfare of Labour in Otago, was held ill the Trades Hall last evening, and attended by upwards of ,50 delegates. The president of the council' (Mx W. G. Cope) welcomed delegates,' and explained the reasons for calling the conference. Mr F. Jones was appointed chairman, and Mr L. F. Evans secretary. A deputation from the Workers' Educational Association, consisting of Messrs G. M'Crackcn and I'. W. Wrigglesworth, was reoeived by the conference. The speakers outlined the objects and advantages of the association, and urged the delegates to use their 'influence with their unions in order to strengthen its educational efforts. The conference resolved: "That conference express its appreciation of the Workers' Educational Association and recommends all unions to give their utmost support, moral and financial, to the association." The conference then proceeded to consider the question of organisation, and after several delegates had spoken tho following motion was carried:—'"That conference consider the best means of strengthening or reorganising the council, so that it may be representative of the whole of tho unions of Otago." The further consideration of the question will be taken when the conference assembles for its second session at 7.30 this evening.
