SLOT TELEPHONES.

TO TILE EDITOR. Sib, —I notico St. KiMu lias made another application for n. slot telephone in ite district. This will bo bovcii to one against South Dunodin, and it surprised mc very much Booing tliat 1 hu-vo a letter trom tho Telegraph Department that South Dunedin would bo considered when additional telephones arc obtainable. .Now, 13 it warranted to put another ono in St. Kilda? Let mo compare the two districts. In areas, we aro about equal; in population much greater. I will go from ono end of St. Kilda to the other, and you will hardly hear tho sound of a hammer, while in South l>unedin thorc are about 2000 to 3000 working in its factories, sawmills, foundries, and other industries. St. Kilda has a few shops on ono side of tho main street, and part of theso aro empty. But in South Dunedin wo havo both sides of the main street taken up with shops, none of theso being unoccupied. True, St. Kilda has bettor schools than South i>unedin, and I cittributo that to the energetic way in which its councillors liavo workjd for these schools. I was always in favDir of St. Kilda joining tho city, but when IJie\* got privileges such as these, as many slot machines as lamp posts in their distri'-.-., and special cars to run there, and protection of tho sandhills by other districts, 1 havo completely altered my mind, and say to St. Kilda: "Keep your little kingdou '<> yoursolf." Or you might bo served like South Dunedin in this respect, it not having <.ry representatives living in the district. Another reason to show St. Kilda is not entitled to any further telephones is this: tho Post Office only pays out about £75 per month ic old-ige pensioners, while South Dunedin pays out nlxmt £3000. Ido hope the Telegraph Department will keep their promise and erect one or two in South Dunedin.—l am, f-ic, J. Downie.
