Flower has been appointed acting-headmaster of Christ's College Christehurcu, the position of headmaster having: been rendered vacant through tho death of Air G. E. Blanch. A Washington Press Association cablo message- announces the death of Mr Jacob Henry feclnil, financier and philanthropist, lho demised was a German by birth and was a -member of tho linn of Kuhu Locb and Co., bankers, New York. A Press Association message from Christchurch states that at tho annual meeting of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association of Canterbury the chairman announced that the general manager (Mr E. VV. Relph) had been appointed supervisor of the association's busmoss activities and assistant general manager. Mr A. J. Jamieson was appointed general manager. Mr O. 0. Reade, a. native ot lnvercargill and well known as a successful journalist and town-planning enthusiast, who has been Government town-planer in Adelaide for some years, has accepted a short engagement with the Government of the Malav States, at a saJary of £2000 a year and liberal travelling expenses. Mr Reade lectured in Dunedm a few years ago, paying : special attention to the replanmng of the I land on, tho waterfront. Dγ D. Mackay, a son of Mr Neil Maokay, ot Dunedin, came out from London as surgeon of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion liner Maman, which arrived at Port Chalmers on Friday with over 450 immigrants. Dr Mackay was a graduate of the Otago University. He went to England some time ago and took his degrees at the London and -Udmburgh Universities. Dr Mackay intends to go into practice in New Zealand. An interesting event took place at tho warehouse of Messrs Bing, Han-is, and Co., Ltd., an Friday afternoon, when Mr James Brown was presented by his fellowemployees with a roll top desk, suitably inscribed. Mr Brown is severing his connection with the firm after 16 years' service as head of the fancy goods, tobacco, and hosiery departments, to start in business _on hie own account in the north. Mr Cowie, in making tho presentation, referred to Mr Brown's faithful service and his popularity as a fellow-employee, and on behalf of the staff expressed regret at his departure, but wished him every success in his new venture. Mr Brown thanked his fnends for their handsome nresent and good wishes.
