BOWLING.
DOMINION CONFERENCE,
(From Oua Own Coiuiesi'Ondent.) WELLINGTON, September 22. At tho annual meeting of the Dominion Bowling Conlerenco to-day Mr S. 11. Underwood was appointed secretary for tho ensuing year. Mr T. Bush, in returning thanks for his election its president, said that the council as a wholo had'been wisely solected. He looked upon it as tho strongest during their career. There would bo a good deal of important business to transact. Tne question of constitution and rules would require tho attention of tho incoming committee. There was a prospect of getting toam s over from Australia, not onlyi to participate in the tournament, but also to tour New Zealand, lie was "quite sure that tne hospitality extended to tflem tnrougiiout tire dominion would be at least in the same measure as that extended to the New Zealanders who liad toured Australia. Tho visitors would probably be under tho auspices of the association. "We have reached that stage," he said, "that some alterations in our programme should be brought about. Tho whole association has become so cumbersome, so largo and out of hand, that wo shall have to curtail it iu moro ways than one." He instanced the provision of luncheons on the ground of the centre at which the tournament was held, this being a heavy burden _on any centre's shoulders. The association had previously decided that the tournament should go round the four centres, each centre drawing up tho programme after tho lour tourneys. It was a question for the council to decide whether the programme should be standardised. A proposal was ma-do by Mr J. A. Nash that an invitation be sent to tho New South' Wales Bowling Assooiation to visit Now Zealand, and to participate in tlio annual tournament, and tho secretary was instructed to forward a letter to New South Wales in terms of the motion • also pointing out that tho banner for the' winning team at the tourney could not leave New Zealand, but all other trophies won could bo taken away. f lho banner," if won by an Australian team, would go to the next rink in order. Considerable discussion took place on the fixing of the date for tho annual tournament, and a proposal to alter the number of games to be played each day in rink matches. Mr Meadowcroft said that the rink game was. paramount, and it was the wifeh of the Wellington Centre to have this year at least four to four and a-half days' play of matches, to start on tho Monday . I hey really wanted to centre on the rink play. He moved —"That tho tournament play should commence with rinks." The motion was carried. On the motion of Mr Meadowcroft it was then unanimously decided that the tournament commence on January 10. Mr Nash, in urging that the final should bo played on the President's afternoon, suggested that the usual North Island v. South Island fixturo should be discontinued. Ho had always looked upon this as a fiasco. It was a waste of time. Tho conference agreed that, if possible, the. suggestion would be adopted. A further proposal from Mr Meadowcroft was that two games of 25 heads each be played per day. ihis was made with a view to preventing a discomfort, to many of the bowlers. Mr Nash, supporting tho motion, safd that tho proposal would be in the interests of tho older players, who were entitled to that little consideration. Tlio motion was carried, and it was also decided that alter section play, four days of rinks, the qualifying teams should revert to three games per day on tho "two-life" system. A proposal regarding the use of two bowls instead of four in the doubles was ruled out of order. It was agreed that the doubles j championship should be played on the same lines as in Christehuroh last year, and that the singles should be played on the "twolife" system in sections of three. Mr Nash moved: "That in the singles championship no substitutes be allowed, and that any player not in attendance shall forfeit his game." This was carried. The entrance fees for the tournament will be the same as at Christchurch last January. The executive for tlio tournament will be tho president, vice-president, secretary, and. treasurer, with Messrs F. Meadowcroft and T; Gray. An annual levy of 3d per member (of all clubs affiliated to the assooiation) was struck. It was decided to accept the invitation of the International Bowling Board to send -a team of bowlers Home, and a committee was appointed in connection with this matter.
