TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL
ENGINEER'S REPORT,
Tho following is the monthly report of the county engineer (Mr B.' B. Couston) to be, submitted to a meeting of the Taieri County Council to t-e held to-day ;— I'he weather has beeii broken, and a number of works involving cartage over olay roads have been discontinued. There was no delivery lost week on the Taieri Mouth road, but fair progress was made earlier in the month, and SSO yaards have been run out since last report, making a total of 2843 yards to date. Sufficient gravel has been quarried to keep the teams employed for a fortnight, and the casual hands have been, paid off. The seven acres of land purchased from Mr Pitta way have been surveyed, and a plan of same forwarded to the ,i county solicitor for purposes of conveyance. In the North Taieri Biding, the School road has been gravelled from Milner's pit, and Ledshman'e_ road from the Silverstream. In East Taieri and Kaikontji Ridings attention has been given to the maantenanoe of the main roads, all pot-holes being filled from tho heaps previously stored at roadside. Although this method of twice handling the material is more costly, it is much more satisfactory, as only one dray is employed, and the metal is bHnded as the patching proceeds. In Deep Stream Riding the clearing of tussock at Style's Gully and tho cutting of scrub at Lister's have been attended to. The next works to be attended to in this riding are the lamb Hill and Mount Alton roads. I was asked to make a recommendation regarding the clay roads in Lee Stream and Mount Hyde districts, and bwre all the roads inspected and reported on in detail, and ■ odvise that teams be engaged far two months' work of tho Carlvle gTader and plough to surface tho roads, "that two 12in culverts 'ba inserted on the Fortification read, that 20 chains of road at the Gluepot .be metalled, that the tassodjß be chipped from the Game Hen road and Barron's road, and that the Clarlts surfaceman attend to the Peat Bog road. As tho Hindon surfaceman's time will be occupied for some time on the roads to the east of tho river, I recommend that the grading, tussocking, and metalling be carried out by casual labour. In Struth-Taieri Riding gravel repairs have been effected to Poplar Grove and MTJaidy's road, and the section of the Moonfight road complained of has been attended. I am of opinion that tho council should prescribe the number and position of lights to be earned by vehicles within tlio conntv and also that the rule of the road should be made clear where two vehicles approach or pass at a bridge, and refer these matters to yon for consideration.
