QUEEN'S THEATER

The leading picture in the r.ew programme shown yesterday at the Queen's Theatre is "The Broken Melody," a highly sentimental talo with Eugene O'Brien taking the star male part. The plot of the story certainly has the merit of simplicity. The scene opens in New York, and the leading characters are a young artist, a girl singer who is his sweetheart, an old 'cello player, and a wealthy woman who patronises the artist. The artist and the singer havo actually planned marriage, but the old 'cellist strongly persuaded them both against it on tho ground that it would imperil their artistic careers. In the artist's case this advice is reinforced by the offer of his wealthy patron to give him a chance to go and make his fame in Paris. He accepts, not at all understanding the. sacrifice his sweetheart is making in giving him up, and in time success comes to him in the Paris salons, but tho great portrait he paints is not that of his model, but of the girl whose face for ever haunts him. She too wins success on the concert platform, but to neither docs their, dearlyoought success bring happiness. They learn their lesson, however, and in the end the artist returns to New York to find in tho love of the girl still waiting the happiness and true success that his art has failed to bring him. Bright and varied supports include the Charlie Chaplin comedy "Shanghaied," an episode in the Mary Page serial, a Pathe comedy, and a recent Topical Gazette.
