DISTURBER OF THE PEACE
LECTURER ON ECONOMICS.
REV". J. K. ARCHER CRITICISED.
(I j eb Ukited Press Association.)
OIIRISTCSHURCH, June 28. At a meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors to-day tho Collage Committeo recommended that tho Rov. J. K. Archer bo appointed tutor for tho Sydenham class in economics.
Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., asked whether there was any safeguard as to views Mr Archer would expound. I-Ie (Mr Isitt) could not see how it was right, under present critical conditions, for the board to place itself in tho position of appointing as lecturer in economics one who is a strong propagandist on one sido of tho question. Mr Weston said Mr Archer had been trained at Nottingham University, arid had boon recognised by tho Otago University. Mr Ci. T. Booth said that if a man was a Socialist, and a disturber of the peace, the board should not put itself in the j>osition of helping to disseminate false doctrines. Tho board should not appoint a propagandist to the position. Mr Isitt contended thai a lecturer should not be a, man who held extreme views. Eventually the recommendation was referred back to the committee for further consideration.
The Rev. J. IC. Art'her unsuccessfully contested the Invercartrill seat, l-ast election against the Hon. J. A. Hanan. He announced himself as a Labour candidate.
