LONDON, June 25. It ia announced that Baron D. Algernon has been appointed British Ambassador to Berlin, and Signor Dimarcino (?) Italian Ambassador to Berlin.—Reuter. [Baron D'Abcirnon is best known as chairman of the Liquor Traffic Control Board, under whom the Carlisle experiment in Stato control -was made. Ho recently made another noteworthy contribution to tho knotty subject of the prices of commodities. This eminent British financier was widely known as Sir Edgar Vincent, who was British, Belgian, and Dutch representative on tho Council of Ottoman Public Debt and subsequently' president. He has also acted as financial adviser to the Egyptian Government and governor of tho Imperial Ottoman Bank. . . also acted as chairman of the Dominions Royal Commission, in which capacity he visited New Zealand. It is probable tnat the Italian Ambassador is Signor M. Lr. i)e Martino, who was Italy's MinisterPlenipotentiary at the Paris Peace Conference, and acted as Secretary-general to the Foreign Minister.]

THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

PROBABLE CANDIDATES.

HTNDENBURG SEEKS NOMINATION.

. BERLIN, June 26. (Received June 28, at 5.15 p.m.) Herr Ebert, in accordance with tho Constitution, asked the Reichstag to fix a date for the Presidential election, which has roused a discussion on the likely candidates. The Majority Socialists w'ill probably urge Herr Ebert to stand' for another term, but it is doubtful -whether he will consent.

It is understood that Marshal von Hindenburg has asked the ex-Kaiser's permission to become a candidate. The Conservatives will have a strong candidate. One suggested is Prince von Bnlow, but he will probably decline, as he intends to live in Switzerland.—A. and N.Z. Cable
