TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Taiori County Ccwmoil waa held at Mosgiel on Friday. Or Walter Blackio presiding. The Finance Committee reported) the reeeipta for the past fivo weeks £437 14s 7d. The bank book showed a debit balance of £3109 193 7d. Accounts totalling £2186 8s lOd were recommended for payment.— Adopted. The Ranger reported having found wandering 24 cattle and five horses. Two horses had boon impounded in Outram pound. Tho owners of properties with hedges overhangjug tho Kaikorai Valley road had promised to trim same. The owner of the property at Halfway Bush where trees overhung the road promised to attend to tho ranger's requirements as soon as labour was available. —Received. Tho Sanitary Inspector reported tho slaughter-houses in the county to bo in good order. The piggery at Green Island •was in a clean condition.—Received. Tho District Health Officer wrote regarding the pollution of the Kaikorai Stream, and suggested a meeting of the local bodies concerned to dismiss tho possibility of providing drainage facilities for this district.— Chairman and Cr Soott to represent the council.
In connection with the application of T. and K. O'Brien, of "Woipori, miners, for a water-race,. it was resolved to reply that any roads crossed must have pipe culverts constructed to the satisfaction of the county engineer, and that they bo maintained by the applioants. The Department of Public Works forwarded a copy of the proclamation taking land for a road and closing a road through block IV, Sutton survey district.—Received. The Bay of Islands County Council sought support to a resolution giving local bodias full pernor to enforce tho payment of rates by Maoris, or providing for the payment of Native rates by the general Government. —Resolved to support the resolution. The Stratford Borough Council urged making Saturday the universal half-holiday throughout the dominion.—Resolved to support same.
The Hawera Borough Council asked for support to a proposal urging tho Government immediately to take the necessary steps for the removal of the duty on children's footwear.—Received. | The Mosgiel Borough Council applied for about 300 yards of metal for maintenance purposes.—To bo supplied at increased rates.
Renewals of slaughtering licenses on behalf of the following applicants were recommended D. MTE. Fisher, Middleman*; J. B MTLeod, Mosgiel; A. Ralston, AHanton; W. Bennett, Middlemarch. W. J. McDowell, N.E. Valley, applied for, repairs to Spears's road, leading to Flagstaff.—To ho attended to when funds were available.
The Green Island Borough Council forwarded particulars of the proposed amounts to be expended upon the Main South road for the year 1920-2 L The Taieri County's share would be £175 17s 10d.—Noted, council to be asked to cut down the work somewhat.
, W. Harvey, Mbmona, applied for permission to swing a* gate on the fence alongside the new bridge at his place, as the entrance to his orchard had been blocked by the wing fence.—Granted, subject to engineer's approval G. H. Pittaway, Kuri Bush, offered a gravel pit on his property for sale to the council —Chairman and Cr Christie to interview the writer.
Wm. Thomson, Middlemarch, wrote regarding the culvert in front of his property, which needed repairing. He applied for. permission to extend his front fence from 4ft to 6ft out on the road, in order to provide protection for a live hedge. Referred to Cr Matheson and the engineer. W. _ H. Rains, South Dunedin, asked for permission to cut down for removal all or any portion of the willows growing on \ the beach on the upper side of the West Taieri bridge.—Consideration deferred for a month.
The Secretary, Otofa'a Cemetery Trustees, renewed his application for a grant from the council to help to clear the gorse in the cemetery.—Cre Christie and Kempshell were asked to confer with the trustees on th*> matter.
F. J. Williams wrote in reference to the setting back of the roadline fronting some sections in block XI, East Taieri survey district; or, as an alternative, the exempting _of the roads from the provisions of section 117 of the Publio Works Act. Resolved that the roads be exempted, subject to the boundary line being set back. Cr Scott mentioned that the repairs to M'Millan's road, Brockville, promised by the Dunedin City Council, had not been attended to.—To be inquired into. A special meeting followed the ordinary meeting, at which the balance sheet was considered and adopted.
